Kyoto agreement framework |
|
|
As a precursor to the
Kyoto Protocol, a Framework Convention held by the United Nations was
held in the early nineties to address issues of concern over the
decline of the planet's health. The Kyoto Protocol, which was set up
later to help guide industrial countries to reduce their emissions of
greenhouse gasses by 2012 (when the agreement expires) was seen as a
building block for countries to start their own initiatives in order to
make the world's environment a cleaner place. Several Earth Summits
have taken place at the hands of the United Nations as they look to
develop ways to ensuring that environmental needs are met.
Such areas of culture and environment such as biodiversity, climate
change and sustainable development have all come under discussion and
scrutiny as part of the Kyoto Protocol. Framework for the agreement was
built upon the need to reduce gasses being released into the
atmosphere, such as Carbon Dioxide and Methane. Gasses such as these
are abundantly produced but cause a great deal of harm to the
environment by acting as greenhouse gasses, which serve only to heat
the planet. Much news has been made of the impact of global warming and
it is the greenhouse gasses that are directly responsible.
The first Earth Summit came into place before the Kyoto Agreement.
