Kyoto protocol signatories Print E-mail
The Kyoto Protocol
signatories are the countries which have signed up to be an integral
part of a world plan to address the issue of global warming through
greenhouse gas emissions. After profiles were raised about the effect
that global warming was having on the planet, leading industrialised
nations got together in order to find common ground on which to fight
the rise in emissions. The signing of the Kyoto Protocol came after
many years of Conventions by the United Nations which were held to
discuss the very issues of the state of the climate and what could be
done to help it.
In February 2009, there were 183 Kyoto Protocol signatories which had
ratified the conditions of the agreement. The important agreement,
targeting global warming, was formally sanctioned to its predecessor,
the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. Signing of
the Kyoto Protocol was of course optional, but upon signing, it is done
so with the intent of ratifying the Protocol. This means that any Annex
I party, which is defined as being a developed country or one that is
in a transition period with its economy, has agreed to meet the
Protocol's emission guidelines. Out of the 39 parties which have
signed, 38 have fallen fully into the agreement of meeting targets.
